Akrotiri (2024)

Akrotiri is a film exploring the division of land in Cyprus, and by extension the current and historical territorial disputes and conflicts that dominate the Eastern Mediterranean. At focus are British military enclaves, UN monitored de-militarized zones, and ghost towns that divide the island; along with eerily contrasted resorts, pristine beaches, holiday-makers, expats and club-goers.

The camera wanders the island — encountering borders and boundaries that reveal histories of expropriation, dispossession, and proxy warfare. The work examines Cyprus’ military strategic value to NATO and the West as a logistics and intelligence hub.  Akrotiri was filmed as a series of encounters with off-limit zones, sensitive military installations and dark tourist destinations that tacitly imply the West’s continued efforts to maintain dominance and hegemony in the Middle East through proxies like Cyprus.
