Joshua Roberts is a UK and California based moving image artist interested in ontological uncertainty, memory and blurring lines of truth. His works use oneiric visual and sonic languages to explore the intersection of personal experience and speculative worlds; where he folds the biographical and the historical into the mythic and imaginal. Roberts holds a vocational degree in Music Technology, a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from The Evergreen State College and an MA in Artists Film and Moving Image from Goldsmiths University of London. His moving image and installation works have been exhibited in spaces such as APT Gallery and Image Music Text Gallery. Roberts combines his photographic, film and time based media skills with alternative modes of story telling to construct sensorial and affective spaces that situate the viewer between thresholds of perception and understanding, asking them to occupy places that are both uncanny and familiar. His work attempts to denature the quotidian and the commonplace to reveal strange and sometimes otherworldly agencies, as well as to imagine cultural, political and social contingencies for an uncertain world that is in a state of flux. Central to his work is a question of agency — whether or not we can escape the ghosts of the past.
